What it actually costs to leave your car in the city overnight

The decision most people make at the end of a night out is “leave the car and get a rideshare”. It feels like the cheap option. Totted up honestly, it usually is not.

The bill nobody adds up

Leaving the car in the city costs you four separate things, and only the first one feels like a cost at the time.

• The ride home. Late at night, on a weekend, with a surge multiplier on it. This is the number people compare.
• Overnight parking. Most CBD car parks change rate at midnight or charge a flat overnight fee. Street parking that was free at 7pm often is not at 8am.
• The trip back. A second fare the next morning, in the opposite direction, at a time when you would rather be doing anything else.
• The risk. A car left on a city street overnight is exposed to fines, towing, break-ins and the occasional reversing van.

The part that has nothing to do with money

The morning trip back is the bit people underestimate. It is not just the fare — it is an hour of a Saturday, a lift to organise, and a car you are hoping is where you left it. Waking up with the car already in the driveway is worth something on its own.

When leaving it really is cheaper

We would rather be straight with you. If you are staying in the city overnight anyway, if you have free secure parking, or if you are one person going a very short distance, a rideshare is probably the better call. Our service earns its price on the round trip, not the one-way hop.
