Questions

Someone else driving your car

It is a service most people have not used before, so here are the questions we actually get asked.

How is this different from Uber or a taxi?

Uber and taxis bring their own vehicle and their own driver. RideBack brings only the driver — they drive your car. That means you travel in your own seat with your own things, and your car ends the night wherever you do, instead of being left behind in a city car park.

Do I need to provide the car?

Yes. RideBack is a driver service, not a car service. We never supply a vehicle. A professional driver comes to you and drives the car you already own, which is what keeps your own insurance in play and means you never have to abandon your car and come back for it.

What if I have been drinking?

That is the most common reason people book us. Our driver has not been drinking — a zero-alcohol, zero-drug rule applies for their whole shift — and they will drive you and your car home together. No leaving the car at the venue, and no trip back for it in the morning.

Is my car insured while your driver is driving it?

Your own comprehensive policy is the primary cover, because it is still your car. Before your first trip, check with your insurer that your policy allows any licensed driver, with no restriction by name, age or experience. Where our driver is at fault for damage, RideBack contributes towards your excess. The detail is in section 7 of our terms.

Do I have to change my insurance, or sign a rental agreement?

No. There is no rental, no company vehicle and no new policy. Nothing to declare to your insurer and nothing to sign, collect or return. Your cover stays exactly as it is — that is one of the main advantages of being driven in your own car.

Who actually drives my car?

A vetted RideBack professional. Every driver holds a current unrestricted Australian licence and has passed an identity and right-to-work check, a licence and driving-history check, a national police check, an in-person interview and a practical drive. Every trip is rated afterwards, and we act on what those ratings say. See how we screen them.

Is it cheaper than getting two rideshares?

Usually, once you count the whole night rather than one leg of it. Two late-night fares are commonly surged in both directions, your car spends the night in paid city parking, and you still need a trip back the next morning to collect it. One RideBack trip is a single fixed fare with no surge, and it ends with you and your car both at home. There is a worked comparison in this article.

How does the handover work when the driver arrives?

Your driver messages you in the app when they arrive, and waits — there is no rush and no doorbell. When you are ready you walk out, point them at your car and get in. They drive; you are a passenger in your own vehicle. At your destination they hand the keys back and go.

Can I book a driver for a whole day, with several stops?

Yes. The hourly service runs from 2 to 12 hours with unlimited stops — it suits winery days, a run of appointments, or a long night with several venues. For something bigger or repeating, ask about custom packages.

How does the driver get home after dropping me off?

That is our problem, not yours, and it is never added to your fare as a surprise. Dispatch schedules driver returns as part of the job, and the price you were quoted before you confirmed is the price you pay.

Which cities do you cover?

Gold Coast, Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, Hobart and Byron Bay, plus the regions around them. Longer runs — interstate, country weddings, a drive to a holiday house — are quoted per trip from anywhere. See where we drive.

What happens if my plans change on the night?

Add a stop, change the destination or keep the driver longer — just tell them. The fare is recalculated on what was actually driven, and your driver will tell you before anything materially changes it. Cancelling well ahead of your pickup costs nothing; see section 5 of our terms.
